Wildlife

Colorado has a healthy variety of wildlife throughout the state. While on WaltAbout I have had the opportunity to experience some of the absolute best that Mother Nature has to offer. When I moved to the foothills in Lakewood I had my reservations because on the bus ride out it didn’t seem like there was too much here. I would find out very shortly just how fortunate I was! Diagnosed as morbidly obese in 2015 I was not in very good physical shape when I relocated here. I changed my lifestyle and started to hike every day. Eventually I would start bicycling letting me go further and further on my WaltAbouts while also providing me with the ability to carry more gear in panniers(saddlebags) and off of me.

Many of the wildlife pictures you will see on WaltAbout were taken within a five mile radius of my home. The elk picture you see to the left was taken less than three miles from me at one of the open space areas here in the foothills. My passion for finding and observing the wildlife grew and never waned. I found that I had a very favorable predictability factor with the wildlife. They did not perceive me as predator, prey or threat. I was just part of what was acceptable to be there. That factor gave me the opportunity to observe many species and their distinctive phenology, which are the periodic events that will take place as Mother Nature controls and regulates her domain.

Reproduction from mating to birth is part and parcel in Mother Nature’s ability to regenerate her children. I have been fortunate enough to see various stages of the process. Wildlife follows the food and I used that philosophy along with their reproductive cycles to enhance my chances of finding them. That knowledge combined with my unbridled passion put WaltAbout into full gear as I honed my photography skills. As you navigate through WaltAbout.Com I will be sharing with you the unique experiences that were presented to me through my photos and videos.

  1. Hi Walt! I was a ranger on Evans (now Blue Sky) back around 2020. We used to chat at the fee booth and you would always bring us cookies from the lodge. Love seeing your work. You captured them all so perfectly. Hope you’re well and our paths may cross again some day!
